Bayeux Tapestry - Year 4 (2021/2022)

Last Term Year 4 took part in an exciting craft scheme linked to The Bayeux Tapestry. We started by learning about the Anglo-Saxon period in history and researched facts about the Bayeux Tapestry. In our sketchbooks we created an imaginative fact file collaging images from the tapestry and then using mark making to create a stitch like quality to our drawings.

We learnt how to felt wool fibres (felt making) and worked in a pair to create a piece of felt for a background for or images. We then had to shape fibres on top of the felt to create a horse shape. Once again, we used hot soapy water and cold water in stages (the felting process) to rub the felt together knitting the fibres.

The last stage was to learn sewing stitches, we watched some YouTube videos to help us learn the following embroidery stitches:

  • Blanket stich
  • French knots
  • Running stitch
  • Over stitch

The results of our work have featured on lots of social media posts and is now going to feature in an article for the Charity Access Art, inspiring teachers all over the country.
