In Year 5 we have participated for much of the year in an exciting national initiative entitled Yinka's Challenge. This is a Crafts Council UK project. We were set a challenge to reimagine and re-purpose an object.
First, we started by researching the artist Yinka Llori who inspired the scheme. We created responses in our sketchbooks.
Nest we created mind maps about ourselves which told a story about our own unique culture. In a group we had to choose one of these ideas that had strong visual starting points and this one became the plan for designing our chairs. We had to use different craft skills to create the chairs. Such as…
- Papier mâché
- Wire work
- Felt making
- Masking tape, design orientated painting techniques
Our re purposed chairs have attracted much attention nationally. Unfortunately, we didn't win the challenge event, but the work was too brilliant for you not to see and hear more about it.
